The head rotated; the eyes, made from Buick headlamps, blinked; the sign: Hoot Hoot, I Scream, used elements of a theater marquee. For over 50 years, Tillie Hattrup ran this L.A.-area refreshment spot designed and built by her husband, Roy in 1926-27. It was demolished in 1979.

A barn owl leaves an impression after flying into a window. There are a variety of theories as to why birds hit windows - the most obvious is that windows are clear and the flying creatures simply fail to spot the danger in time. Others have pointed out that birds often appear to strike windows deliberately. Some people believe the birds see their own reflection in the glass, being territorial they may mistake this for a rival and be trying to scare them away.

It’s DONE! I think I finally struck the balance between contrast and color harmony. This is just a photograph that I color-matched as best I could on my unreliable LCD laptop screen, but once I can get it to a scanner, I will be selling prints of this piece, so keep your eyes peeled!
